- Don't mix plating materials on connector contacts, as this increases likelihood of corrosion. For instance, gold plated-to-gold plated is fine, tin-to-tin is fine. Gold-to-tin is bad.
- When designing PCBs, use a ground plane by default. This has many practical benefits, but also big benefits with regards to signal integrity. If you are going to design a high frequency systems, grounding strategy is a huge rabbit hole that you should read up on.
- Need your electronics to be exposed to the weather? Look into this stuff:
- Conformal coating (if you can't put electronics in a sealed box)
- IP rated connectors
- Connector lubricant/grease
