Use a big enough tip, your work-piece will not be hotter by forcing the tip into it, this will only result in a broken tip.
Use flux when soldering smd components.
Do add some tin to the soldering iron if you are using soldering braid/wick.
When finished soldering or leaving the soldering iron for some time add tin to the tip.
